About Us
Remi is founder and creative director of Outwitting The Stars. Of Indian heritage but raised in Bangkok, she is second generation jeweler.
Growing up Indian in Thailand meant being heavily exposed to Buddhism, Hinduism and all things Sanskrit. Remi’s family is of Sikh faith and would gather around the dinner table and talk for hours about Sanatana Dharma, all things spiritual and philosophy. The family would visit India almost often where they’d explore aesthetics and culture, overdose on food and create memories that would imprint forever as nostalgia.
Autobiography of a Yogi by Parmahansa Yogananda
In middle school, her father Jim discovered Autobiography of a Yogi by Parmahansa Yogananda and quickly became engrossed with all things kriya yoga. In the book, Chapter 6 is titled Outwitting the Stars, and Yogananda speaks of the importance of gemstones and metals in mitigating and buffering “karmic debts” based on vedic astrology. This is where Remi's interest in having the power to create your life first began.
New York City
In 2010, Remi moved to New York City, where she went to New York University for grad school, and worked for many years. NYC influenced Remi’s love for history and art, and allowed her to develop her personal style. It is also where Remi’s love for jewelry first took seed. Outwitting The Stars may have launched in 2026, but it was definitely incubated in the Lower East Side in 2010.
Vedic Astrology and Gemstones
In Vedic astrology, gemstones are considered powerful and natural conduits that channel cosmic rays from planets to balance energy, improve fortune, and provide remedial measures for specific life challenges. They work by strengthening weak but functional benefic planets or mitigating malefic influences when worn based on a precise natal chart analysis.
Metals in Sikhism
It’s no surprise that metals are also powerful conduits of energy and have been studied by cultures and religions as well as within more modern recent frameworks of Western research. As a Sikh, Remi has worn the karra - a steel or iron bangle since birth. The karra is a part of the Sikh “uniform” partly due to the fact that it provides positive impacts on blood circulation, reduces fatigue, and provides a calming effect. The bangle serves as a conductor of energy, helping to balance physical and spiritual energy.
Copper, Silver and Gold in India
In addition to steel and iron, metals have been used for thousands of years across India due to its well researched benefits on the body. For example, copper bangles and anklets are believed to cleanse the lymph and blood, and support digestion and metabolism. It is also antimicrobial. Silver is worn because it cools inflammation and excess heat in the body. It also strengthens immunity and reproductive tissues. Silver is also known to support the nervous system and provides restful sleep. Gold on the other hand is worn for intelligence and longevity. It strengthens heart health and circulation and is excellent in building Ojas - immunity, fertility and vitality.
How does Vedic Astrology differ from Western Astrology?
Vedic astrology and Western astrology differ mainly in how they measure the zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is based on the actual positions of constellations in the sky and adjusts for Earth’s gradual wobble (precession). In contrast, Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons and begins at the spring equinox, without adjusting for shifting star positions. Because of this, a person’s zodiac sign is often different between the two systems.
They also differ in focus and interpretation. Vedic astrology places strong emphasis on karma, destiny, and life timing, often using detailed systems like planetary periods (dashas) and giving more importance to the Moon sign. Western astrology, on the other hand, is more focused on personality, psychology, and self-expression, with the Sun sign being the most central feature. Overall, Vedic astrology tends to be more predictive, while Western astrology is more descriptive and introspective.
