What is a natural gemstone?

A natural gemstone is a mineral or organic gem material formed without being manufactured in a laboratory. Natural stones can still undergo treatments designed to alter color, clarity or durability.

What does heated mean?

Heat treatment is widely used in the gemstone trade, particularly for stones such as ruby and sapphire. Heating can alter or improve visible color and clarity. A heated stone can still be natural because the stone itself was mined from the earth.

What does treated mean?

“Treatment” is a broad term that can include heat as well as filling, diffusion, irradiation, dyeing, oiling and other processes. The relevance of a treatment varies by gemstone, which is why treatment disclosure is more informative than a blanket label.

What is a lab-grown gemstone?

A lab-grown or synthetic gemstone is created in a controlled environment rather than mined. It can share many chemical and physical properties with its natural counterpart, but its origin is different.

Why do some Jyotish practitioners prefer untreated stones?

Some lineages and practitioners of Jyotish prefer natural, minimally treated or untreated gemstones for astrological use. Others focus on different criteria.
