Hi, I'm Remi

Heart behind Outwitting The Stars. I'm so happy to be sharing some of the wisdom from my glorious motherland - India - with you.

I'm a second-generation Bangkok-based jeweler of Indian descent. I was heavily exposed to Buddhism, Hinduism and all things Sanskrit. My family follows the Sikh faith and growing up, conversations about Sanatana Dharma and all things philosophy were normal dinner table topics.

Autobiography of a Yogi by Parmahansa Yogananda

In middle school, my dad Jim, discovered Autobiography of a Yogi by Parmahansa Yogananda and quickly became engrossed with all things kriya. In Chapter 6 of the book titled Outwitting the Stars, Yogananda speaks of the importance of gemstones and metals in mitigating and buffering "karmic debts" based on Vedic astrology. This is where my first interest in Vedic jewelry took seed.

New York City

Fast forward to 2010 when I moved to New York City and lived in a tiny Lower East Side apartment with my brother. We both went to New York University and would walk to West 4th to get to classes. I was the happiest on my daily commutes - where I'd soak in the culture and energy along the way. NYC infused my soul with a passion for history and art and opened up my eyes to the melting pot of cultures that was present on every block. This gave me a new lens to which I appreciated the Indian heritage I was exposed to.

Vedic Astrology and Gemstones

In Vedic astrology, gemstones are considered powerful and natural conduits that channel cosmic rays from planets to balance energy, improve fortune, and provide remedial measures for specific life challenges. They work by strengthening weak but functional planets or mitigating malefic influences when worn based on a precise natal chart analysis.

Metals in Sikhism

It's no surprise that metals are also powerful conduits of energy and have been studied by cultures and religions as well as within more modern recent frameworks of Western research. As a Sikh,  I've worn the karra - a steel or iron bangle since birth. The karra is a part of the Sikh "uniform" partly due to the fact that it provides positive impacts on blood circulation, reduces fatigue, and provides a calming effect. The bangle serves as a conductor of energy, helping to balance physical and spiritual energy.

Additional Properties of Copper, Silver & Gold

Across Indian traditions, metals such as copper, silver and gold have long been associated with different energetic and symbolic qualities. Copper, for example, has traditionally been worn for balance and vitality, while silver is often associated with cooling and calming qualities.

How does Vedic Astrology differ from Western Astrology?

Vedic astrology and Western astrology differ mainly in how they measure the zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is based on the actual positions of constellations in the sky and adjusts for Earth's gradual wobble (precession). In contrast, Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons and begins at the spring equinox, without adjusting for shifting star positions. Because of this, a person's zodiac sign is often different between the two systems.

They also differ in focus and interpretation. Vedic astrology places strong emphasis on karma, destiny, and life timing, often using detailed systems like planetary periods (dashas) and giving more importance to the Moon sign. Western astrology, on the other hand, is more focused on personality, psychology, and self-expression, with the Sun sign being the most central feature. Overall, Vedic astrology tends to be more predictive, while Western astrology is more descriptive and introspective.
