Outwitting The Stars believes a gemstone recommendation is only useful when the stone itself is described clearly. For personalized commissions, we source natural gemstones through trusted suppliers and discuss the characteristics that matter to the specific piece before production begins.

Natural does not mean untreated

A natural gemstone formed in the earth, but it may still have been heated, oiled or otherwise treated after mining. We distinguish origin from treatment rather than using “natural” as shorthand for “untreated.” Where treatment information is available, it is part of the sourcing discussion.

What we look at when sourcing

Depending on the gemstone and commission, we consider species and variety, natural versus lab-grown origin, known treatment status, color, clarity, cut, dimensions, durability, price and the requirements of the Jyotish recommendation.

Laboratory reports

For important gemstones, an independent gemological laboratory report can provide useful identification and treatment information. A report does not make a gemstone “astrologically effective”; it is a gemological document that helps verify what the material is and, where tested, what treatments or origin conclusions the laboratory can support.

Jyotish preferences vary

Some Vedic astrology practitioners prefer untreated or minimally treated gemstones for astrological wear. Others use different criteria. We do not present one modern commercial rule as universally binding. If your reading specifies a particular gemstone quality, treatment status, weight, metal or setting requirement, that becomes part of the commission brief.

Responsible sourcing

We aim to work with suppliers and craftspeople who can provide meaningful information about the stones and materials they sell. For wildlife-derived materials such as coral, lawful and responsible sourcing is especially important because trade restrictions and conservation rules can apply.

If treatment status, laboratory documentation, origin or a particular gemstone specification is important to you, tell us at the beginning of the sourcing process. We will discuss what can be verified, what remains uncertain, and how those choices affect appearance, availability and price.
