There is no single universally accepted gemstone-weight formula across all Jyotish practitioners. You may see rules online that calculate gemstone weight from body weight, but different practitioners use different methods and some prioritize gemstone quality over a fixed formula.

What is a carat?

Carat is the international unit used to measure gemstone weight. One metric carat equals 200 milligrams. Carat is a measure of weight, not the visible size of a stone; two gemstones of the same carat weight can have different dimensions because materials have different densities and cuts.

What is ratti?

Ratti is a traditional South Asian weight unit still used in gemstone and astrology contexts. Conversions quoted by modern sellers are not always identical, which is one reason we recommend converting a written recommendation carefully rather than assuming every “ratti” chart online uses the same convention.

Is there a body-weight formula?

Several modern Jyotish and gemstone sellers use body-weight-based formulas, but the formulas themselves vary. We do not treat one commercial rule as a universal classical requirement.

Does a heavier gemstone automatically work better?
