What Is a Vedic Birth Chart? Indian Astrology, Kundli and Jyotish Explained

A Vedic birth chart is an astrological map calculated from your birth date, exact birth time and birthplace using the principles of Jyotish, the Indian astrological tradition. It is also commonly called a kundli, kundali, janma kundali or Jyotish chart.

What information does a Vedic birth chart use?

Three pieces of birth data are fundamental: your date of birth, your exact or best-known time of birth, and your birthplace. Together they are used to calculate the planetary positions and houses for the moment of birth.

Accuracy matters because a change in birth time can alter the ascendant and house placements. If your time is uncertain, tell the astrologer rather than guessing.

How is it different from a Western birth chart?

Most modern Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, while most Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac. Jyotish also places strong emphasis on techniques such as planetary periods, known as dashas, along with house rulership, planetary strength and the Moon. Why does a birth chart matter for gemstones?

In traditional Jyotish, gemstones are associated with planets. But that does not mean everyone should wear the gemstone linked with a favorite planet or zodiac sign. A practitioner considers the wider chart before deciding whether a particular gemstone is appropriate.

What does a Vedic gemstone reading include?

A useful gemstone-focused reading should do more than name a stone. It should explain the relevant chart placements, identify the recommended gemstone and metal, and provide practical wearing guidance. Depending on the practitioner, timing and mantra guidance may also be included.

What if I already have a kundli?

You can still have the chart interpreted specifically for jewelry. A chart document is not the same thing as a gemstone recommendation. If you already have guidance from an astrologer you trust, we can also work from that recommendation when discussing a custom Vedic jewelry commission.
